Carrie Ogden-Bonner Attends Nurse Unity Day

2013 Feb 27

Carrie Ogden-Bonner attended the West Virginia Nurses Association Nurse Unity Day in Charleston, WV on February 13. Ogden-Bonner was among 23 Davis & Elkins College nursing students, and more than 700 nurses from around the State of West Virginia, who traveled to the capitol building to take part in this special day of recognition and education. Ogden-Bonner is from Bowden, WV.

The annual event at the state capital is designed to allow students to meet and network with stakeholders, including nurses, other nursing students and members of the West Virginia Nurses Association to learn about current issues that affect nursing. Among the issues discussed were safe staffing, school nurse positions in West Virginia schools and support of SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) legislation.

"This experience allows the students the opportunity to transfer knowledge from the classroom to the current political arena to voice concerns about topics that will impact health care and nursing practice," D&E Associate Professor of Nursing Melissa McCoy says. "While we were participating in WV Nurse Unity Day, the students were invited to stand on the floor of the galleries as February 13, 2013, was declared West Virginia Nurses Unity Day. We were honored to be part of this."
